More Than a Tool Manufacturer: The Premier Tooling Systems Story

More Than a Tool Manufacturer: The Premier Tooling Systems Story

When manufacturers face a difficult machining problem, simply ordering another cutting tool is not always the answer.

The real challenge may involve cycle time, tool life, runout, chip control, part quality, machine limitations, or an operation that needs to be redesigned altogether.

That is where Premier Tooling Systems comes in.

Since 1992, Premier Tooling Systems has helped manufacturers solve machining challenges through precision cutting tools, engineered toolholding, custom tooling, and complete manufacturing support. From initial concept through implementation, our approach is built around one principle:

Engineer the tooling around the process — not the process around the tooling.

Premier Tooling Systems Since 1992

Premier Tooling Systems was founded with a clear goal: develop cutting-tool solutions that improve manufacturing performance.

More than three decades later, that goal still drives the company.

Based in Grand Blanc, Michigan, Premier combines decades of machining experience with modern engineering and manufacturing technology to support customers throughout North America.

But what we manufacture is only part of the story.

The bigger question is what the tooling needs to accomplish.

Does the customer need to reduce cycle time?

Improve bore accuracy?

Extend cutting tool life?

Eliminate an unstable setup?

Combine several operations into one tool?

Improve repeatability?

Those questions come before selecting the tool.

We Don't Believe in One-Size-Fits-All Tooling

Two machining operations can look similar on paper and still require very different solutions.

Machine capability, workpiece material, production volume, available clearance, required tolerances, coolant delivery, tool projection, and existing process conditions can all affect performance.

That is why Premier Tooling Systems does not approach every application with a standard catalog answer.

Our engineers work directly with manufacturers to understand the machining process and develop tooling around the requirements of the application.

That may involve an existing Premier Tooling Systems product.

It may require a modified solution.

Or it may call for a completely custom-engineered tool.

The objective is not simply to sell another tool.

The objective is to improve the process.

More Than Cutting Tools

Premier Tooling Systems provides a broad range of precision machining solutions covering multiple operations and tooling requirements.

Manufacturers can explore our precision tooling catalog for solutions including:

  • Boring and holemaking tools
  • Custom and combination tooling
  • Hydraulic toolholding systems
  • Milling tools and inserts
  • Specialty threading
  • Tap holders and toolholding
  • Thread cutting
  • Thread forming
  • Turning and grooving
  • Toolholding and clamping systems

Our growing hydraulic toolholding range includes systems engineered around specific machining challenges, from high-precision general-purpose applications to limited-clearance and Swiss-type CNC environments.

For example, Hydro-Micron combines precision hydraulic clamping with vibration damping for drilling, reaming, tapping, milling, and specialty tooling applications.

Other Premier Tooling Systems solutions address tool presetting, additional reach, restricted clearance, grinding, runout adjustment, and specialized production requirements.

Engineering Comes Before Manufacturing

One of the biggest differences at Premier is that our work can begin long before a tool reaches the machine.

Our engineering services support manufacturers throughout the machining process.

Engineering Consultation

A tooling project starts with understanding the application.

Our engineers evaluate the machining challenge, production goals, machine capabilities, existing process, and tooling requirements before recommending a solution.

Custom Tool Design

Standard tooling is not always enough.

Premier designs custom precision tools around specific machining operations to improve performance, repeatability, accessibility, and tool life.

Time Studies and Process Optimization

Saving a few seconds from a production operation can become significant when that operation is repeated thousands of times.

Premier evaluates tooling, machine capability, process flow, and cycle time to identify opportunities for improving manufacturing efficiency.

Process Implementation

A good tool design still needs to perform in production.

Our support can continue through installation, setup, testing, and production launch to help ensure the tooling operates as intended.

Full Turnkey Solutions

For more complex applications, Premier Tooling Systems can manage the project from initial concept through engineering, tool design, manufacturing, process validation, and production support.

That is why we describe ourselves as more than just a tool manufacturer.

Precision Manufacturing With a Purpose

Every tooling decision ultimately affects the part being produced.

Runout can influence tool life.

Tool projection can influence rigidity.

Chip control can affect surface finish and process reliability.

Poor toolholding can undermine an otherwise excellent cutting tool.

That is why Premier Tooling Systems looks at machining as a system rather than a collection of independent components.

Our recent technical articles on tool runout and fine boring vs reaming reflect the same philosophy: understanding the machining process comes before choosing the solution.

Supporting a Wide Range of Industries

Premier Tooling Systems works with manufacturers across demanding industries where accuracy, reliability, and production efficiency matter.

These include:

  • Automotive
  • Aerospace
  • Hydraulics
  • Heavy equipment
  • Defense
  • Medical manufacturing
  • Consumer products
  • General manufacturing

The component may change.

The tolerance may change.

The machine may change.

But the objective remains the same: create a more reliable and productive machining process.

Tooling Should Keep Delivering Value

The relationship does not necessarily end when a tool enters production.

Premier Tooling Systems also provides tool repair and reconditioning, helping manufacturers restore suitable tooling and extend the value of their existing investment rather than automatically replacing it.

For production environments with specialized or higher-value tooling, repair and reconditioning can become an important part of controlling long-term tooling costs.

Investing in the Next Generation of Engineering

Manufacturing depends on more than machines and tooling.

It depends on people.

That is one reason Premier Tooling Systems has supported FIRST Robotics Competition Team 2337, the EngiNERDs, from Grand Blanc High School since the team's rookie year in 2008.

Premier Tooling Systems remains listed as an official Team 2337 sponsor, helping support students gaining hands-on experience with engineering, robotics, manufacturing, programming, and problem-solving.

You can read more about that relationship in Building the Future: Premier Tooling Systems and FIRST Robotics Team 2337.

For us, supporting the next generation of engineers is closely connected to supporting the future of manufacturing.

Experience Matters — So Does Continuous Improvement

Premier Tooling Systems has been manufacturing precision tooling since 1992, but experience alone is not enough.

Machining technology continues to evolve.

Machines become faster and more capable.

Component designs become more complex.

Tolerance expectations become tighter.

Manufacturers continue looking for ways to improve productivity and reduce cost per part.

Our mission is built around continuous improvement in product quality and customer service while delivering high-quality, value-added tooling solutions.

That means combining the machining knowledge developed over more than three decades with the technology and engineering required for today's manufacturing environment.

Bring Us the Machining Challenge

Sometimes you already know which tool you need.

Sometimes you only know the problem.

Either is a good place to start.

Whether the challenge involves tool life, cycle time, precision holemaking, runout, surface finish, restricted clearance, or a completely custom machining operation, Premier Tooling Systems can help evaluate the application and develop the right approach.
